However, if you want to have a go yourself these are the most common problems:

• Your hard drive could be too full of data to function efficiently. There should be at least 15% of hard disk space free on XP systems or 5 MBs free space on older windows systems to enable disk filing. This applies to which drive Windows is on.
• Archive/backup & delete old data to a CD, DVD, network or another drive.
• Delete temporary internet files
• Remove unwanted programs or programs planted by adware, malware or viruses
• Your hard drive is too fragmented (This occurs through normal use of the internet, writing or erasing data)
• Installing and uninstalling programs in windows can leave parts of programs which end up cluttering your drive or remove necessary windows system files
• Windows also keeps a registry record of virtually everything you do with your computer!
• Clearing up programs is best left to specific programs designed for this job but make sure you have a backup
• Cleaning and tidying the registry is something you should be doing regularly using a reliable utility
• Check your system has all the necessary files and services running
• Installing a fresh version of your OS is ideal and will save your data and programs but may take some time
• Too many programs running - whether there are programs running in the foreground or hidden in the background they all use memory.
• Remove background programs by opening task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete). Click on a program or task and click end task - windows will say if the program is critical and give you the choice to change your mind.
• Slow start-up can be due to the work required to get programs and your user preferences up and running.
• Check you system is starting the way you want it to by checking the system configuration.
• Some programs may be adware, virus or malware and will also need removing but this can be more difficult
• Conflicting devices or drivers - these are most likely after adding hardware, upgrading a previous driver (windows may have done this automatically in the background) or adding new software which uses hardware eg internet service, email, video or music etc.
